One of the things I’ve discovered since starting my photography business is that you are never done learning! I am mostly self-taught, but have invested in a few excellent online courses over the years, and the effects on my work has been amazing! This year, my photographer friend, Kerri, started offering in-person workshops for other photographers. When she announced a lighting and posing workshop in Cazenovia, I knew I had to enroll!
Lighting and posing are the two trickiest things to master as a photographer. They are also the two most important! It goes without saying that without a good understanding of light, your photos will never turn out the way you want them to. Knowledge of posing, on the other hand, goes a long way to making your clients feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. Both are essential to running a solid and consistent photography business!
While I have taken some great posing and lighting courses before, Kerri’s workshop was great in that there were only four “student” photographers. This meant that we each had lots of opportunities to ask questions! It also meant that Kerri could tailor some of the lessons to address specific areas that we wanted to work on. I knew that I wanted to work on creating a connection between my subjects when doing sitting poses, and I had a lot of time to practice!
Kerri also arranged to have a real couple model for us! Caleb and Naomi Brown actually own a wedding rental company, Brown Built Rentals, for their hand-crafted farmhouse tables and benches. They were so sweet to photograph and were such good sports about having five cameras in their faces the whole evening!
Here are some of the images I took during the workshop! I love the ones of Caleb and Naomi in the garden and in the field at golden hour!
